RESUMO

Microwave pyrolysis of corn stover has been optimized by Response surface methodology under different microwave power (500, 700, and 900 W) and three ratios of activated carbon additive (10, 15, and 20%) for obtaining maximum bio-oil yield followed by biochar. The optimal result has been evaluated and the environmental and techno-economic impacts of using solar-powered microwave heating have been tested. The optimal pyrolysis condition found to be 700 W microwave power and 10% of activated carbon. The yields of both bio-oil and biochar were about 74 wt% under optimal condition. The higher heat values of 26 MJ/kg and 16 MJ/kg were respectively achieved for biochar and bio-oil. The major components of bio-oil were hydrocarbons (36%) and phenols (28%) with low oxygen-containing compounds (2%) and acids (2%). Using the solar-powered system, 20,549 tonnes of CO2 can be mitigated over the lifetime of the set-up, resulting in USD 51,373 in carbon credit earnings, compared to 16,875 tonnes of CO2 mitigation and USD 42,167 in carbon credit earnings from a grid electricity system. The payback periods for solar-powered and grid-connected electrical systems are estimated to be 1.6 and 0.5 years, respectively, based on biochar and bio-oil income of USD 39,700 and USD 45,400.

RESUMO

AIM: To screen types of behavioral problems among children with hemophilia and their relation to the disease parameters. METHODS: Fifty boys, 6-18 years old, with moderate and sever hemophilia were subjected to: history taking, joint evaluation using the Hemophilia Joint Health Score, and behavioral assessment using the Child Behavioral Check List. RESULTS: Patients experienced different patterns of behavior disorder. Patients' age significantly correlated with anxious/depressed behavior, somatic complaints, social problems, aggressive behavior, internalizing behavior, and total behavior problems. Hemophilia severity significantly correlated with social problems, thought problems, aggressive behavior, internalizing behavior, externalizing behavior, and total behavior disorders. Affected joint number significantly correlated with withdrawn/depressed behavior, social problems, thought problems, aggressive behavior, internalizing behavior, and total behavior disorders. A high Hemophilia Joint Health Score of the target joints was significantly correlated with social problems, rule-breaking behavior, aggressive behavior, externalizing behavior, and total behavior disorders. Hemophilic arthropathy duration significantly correlated with somatic complaints, social problems, thought problems, attention problems, aggressive behavior, internalizing behavior, externalizing behavior, and total behavior problems. CONCLUSION: Children with hemophilia had behavioral disorders. The most affected scale was aggressive behavior. The least affected scale was attention problems. Behavioral disorders in children with hemophilia are influenced by the age of the patient, the severity of the disease, the number of joints affected, the duration of hemophilic arthropathy, and the score of joint affected by Hemophilia Joint Health Score.

RESUMO

Resistance of cancer cells to tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL)-induced apoptosis represents the major hurdle to the clinical use of TRAIL or its derivatives. The discovery and development of lead compounds able to sensitize tumor cells to TRAIL-induced cell death is thus likely to overcome this limitation. We recently reported that marine actinomycetes' crude extracts could restore TRAIL sensitivity of the MDA-MB-231 resistant triple negative breast cancer cell line. We demonstrate in this study, that purified secondary metabolites originating from distinct marine actinomycetes (sharkquinone (1), resistomycin (2), undecylprodigiosin (3), butylcyclopentylprodigiosin (4), elloxizanone A (5) and B (6), carboxyexfoliazone (7), and exfoliazone (8)), alone, and in a concentration-dependent manner, induce killing in both MDA-MB-231 and HCT116 cell lines. Combined with TRAIL, these compounds displayed additive to synergistic apoptotic activity in the Jurkat, HCT116 and MDA-MB-231 cell lines. Mechanistically, these secondary metabolites induced and enhanced procaspase-10, -8, -9 and -3 activation leading to an increase in PARP and lamin A/C cleavage. Apoptosis induced by these compounds was blocked by the pan-caspase inhibitor QvD, but not by a deficiency in caspase-8, FADD or TRAIL agonist receptors. Activation of the intrinsic pathway, on the other hand, is likely to explain both their ability to trigger cell death and to restore sensitivity to TRAIL, as it was evidenced that these compounds could induce the downregulation of XIAP and survivin. Our data further highlight that compounds derived from marine sources may lead to novel anti-cancer drug discovery.

RESUMO

Children obesity has become one of the most important public health problems in many countries worldwide. Although the awareness of childhood obesity as a modifiable health risk is high, but many societies do not prioritize this issue as a health care problem, which may lead to comorbidities and even premature death. Despite the rising interest in bariatric surgery for children, only laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is being considered in resolving childhood obesity who failed other dietary or drug therapies; however many of LSG procedures failed to reduce the weight in children or resulted in complications postsurgery. Here, we present a novel bariatric procedure to clue out a female child 13 years old presented with Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease-associated morbid obesity. The surgical bariatric technique applied both fundal resection and surgical bypass in pediatric obesity using the Elbanna novel bariatric technique.Bariatric surgical bypass may be considered in complicated-childhood cases who failed all other options.
